High Five For Friday

A Good Hue Images

So happy it's Friday, especially since this is the start of a long 3-day weekend! This year, I don't have any big plans for Labor Day-- just looking forward to relaxing, sleeping in, spending time with friends and family and of course my boopie, Steve.

1. My drive to work this week has been extremely long-- some days 2.5 hours of traffic! Luckily, the traffic coming home has been quicker and there have been some beautiful late August sunsets behind me.

2. It's official-- I have become addicted to juicing! Recipe for this one green juice, two ways, coming soon!

3. With the stress of traffic this week, these beautiful roses Steve had delivered to the office came at the perfect time. I absolutely love the colors, and they smell amazing! Sometimes my sweetie can be such a sweetie.

4. We're always spotting Mittens sniffing around the bottom shelf of our entertainment stand, so Steve created a little bed in it for her. Guess who I spotted getting cozy!

5. Double high-five for the three-day weekend. I hope everyone has an amazing three-day weekend-- Happy un-Labor Day!

Linking up for High Five Friday

Black & White

White jeans Panama Hat

While I typically opt for brighter and cooler colors in the spring and summer months, but there's no escaping a classic black and white combo, it's a summer must! I wish I could remember where I picked up this sheer short-sleeved button down, I've had it for a couple of years and since sheer has been a huge trend this past year, it's been a wardrobe staple. I had also been eyeballing the super cute Panama hat from J.Crew but at $58, it just was not in my budget. Luckily, I came across this cutie from Urban Outfitters for $30... score!

Okay, I just have to rant for a minute; I love sheer tops, I really do. I just don't love what some women choose to wear, or not to wear, underneath. A simple cami, crop top, lace bralette or bandeau—even a cute bra-that-doesn't-look-like-a-bra— are all fab options to wear underneath. Remember, it's see-through— we can all see what's underneath! If you're having trouble figuring out how to wear sheer, try one of these tips.

It's Thursday, let's be happy that tomorrow is Friday... and then a three-day weekend!

Beauty Hues-Day: Fall 2013 Nail Polishes

Fall Nail Polish Shades

When fall comes around, I normally turn to a deep, dark red-- my go-to is Sephora by OPI shade in Brunette on the Internet-- but this season I'd like to change it up with another fall shade. My forecast for the 'IT' shade for fall? Essie's metallic For the Twill of It.

Which nail color trend are you dying to try this fall season?

Banana Nut Oatmeal Smoothie

Happy Friday! Today, I wanted to share my favorite morning smoothie— it's thick and filling, plus full of protein— and can even be used as a meal or dessert replacement. I loved the nut milk drink from the juice cleanse and spent a few weeks perfecting this smoothie; originally it did not have oats and chia, but I wanted a good, thick breakfast smoothie with more sustenance so I wasn't starving by 11 a.m. I especially love using a super ripe banana to get a stronger flavor— if the banana is disgustingly brown and spotty, it's perfect for this smoothie!

Tropical Green Smoothie
- 1 Banana (the more ripe the better!)
- 1/3 cup Raw Cashews
- 1/3 cup Oatmeal (Old-Fashioned Oats)
- ~1 cup Vanilla Almond Milk
- ~1 cup Ice
- 2-3 tablespoons Greek Yogurt
- 1 tsp Cardamon
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- Pinch of Nutmeg
- Pinch of Ginger (dry spice)
- 1 tablespoon Chia Seeds
- Squirt of honey

Place raw cashews in bowl the night before and cover with water to allow to soak overnight. If you have a strong blender (Vitamix or  NutriBullet), you can skip this step as high-powered mixers blend the non-moist nuts well. If not, soak your nuts. Tee hee hee!

Side Note: If you're looking for maturity, it apparently won't be found in this post. Also, moist has to be one of the worst words in the English language. Not a pretty word.

This next step may come off as a little strange, but I do have my reasons strain your oats in water. I find that if you don't, the smoothie has this odd, powdery taste and texture to it. If you like powdery tastes, by all means don't strain your oats. Next, put the oats in a bowl and cover with water-- nuke them in the microwave for about 30 seconds to soften them up. If you're super OCD like me, you can even strain them again.

Combine the rest of ingredients in blender and blend, adding more almond milk as needed if you'd like a thinner consistency. Yummy!

Summer Pointelle

In my last post, I briefly mentioned by obsession with lace-up/combat boots-- I'll wear them with skirts, shorts, dresses, pants, anything! I love how they give an edge to this otherwise feminine outfit.

Let's take a moment to talk about this watch. Back in May, my co-worker and I attended Unique LA, a made-in-america type event with local vendors. After spending a couple hours browsing (and of course, taking advantage of free treat samples and drinks!), I came across a booth for Pretty For Peanuts. Besides having a ridiculously cute name, the shop features handmade, custom jewelry and accessories-- the designer, who unfortunately was not at the booth when I made my purchase, creates these amazing mixed media wrap watches using vintage watch faces-- how cool is that?!?

With bands of pink and gold, this watch immediately caught my attention and I had to have it. $40 later it was mine! Her Etsy shop is definitely worth a peek-- she designs rings, necklaces, and offers custom orders for her watches.

Four Favorites: Fall Inspiration

For those of us living in Southern California, summer tends to stick around until like, I don't know-- November? Kidding (kind of), but out here we definitely have some time before starts feeling like fall... or at least as fall as it can feel. While we may not totally get that leaves-changing, cool, crisp weather that many other parts of the nation do, I still love fall-- the new fashions, gorgeous rich colors, and cool-weather trends.

Feeling Fall: I try to bring the autumn feeling into my home with fall floral arrangements-- out go the bright flowers, being replaced with oranges, maroons, and creams. It gives my place a warmer, cozy feeling.

Fall Must-Have: This gorgeous Darcy Leather Satchel from Rebecca Minkoff. The port shade is so fall and would look excellent on my arm. Just saying.

Fav Fall Trend: Socks with lace-up/combat boots with dresses. Even though it's not fall yet, I found myself wearing a similar style  this past weekend.

Absolute Fall Favorite: Three words-- Pumpkin. Spice. Lattes.

What are some of your fall favorites?

Cheesy Double Bean Quesadillas with Avocado Ranch and Guacamole

Okay, so I cheated. The original recipe calls to make your own homemade ranch from scratch and blend with an avocado, but I didn't have all the ingredients so I used *gasp* store bought guacamole and regular ol' bottled ranch. Still bomb.

I used black and white canned beans and while you can totally cook your beans on the stove, I like to cook them in the crock pot on a low setting all day to get super flavorful with all the seasonings and add-ins. The onions and jalepeño get soft and mash easily with the beans.

Cheesy Double Bean Quesadilla
2-4 servings
- 1 can Black Beans (not drained)
- 1 can Cannelini Beans (not drained)
- 1 cup Chicken Stock
- Half of one Onion, cut into small slices
- Half of one Jalepeño, diced (if you want more spice, dice up the whole thing!)
- 1-2 cloves Garlic
- 1 tsp Cumin
- 1-2 tsps Oregano
- 2 tsps Onion Powder
- Salt & Pepper
- Melted butter
- 4 - 8 Flour Tortillas (I used 4 of the large burrito size, they were huge! If you're using the smaller/regular sized tortillas you could make 4 servings)
- Shredded Cheese (I used Mexican/Fiesta blend with Monterrey Jack, Cheddar, Queso Quesadilla & Asadero Cheese)

Combine beans, stock, onion, jalepeño, garlic, cumin, oregano, onion powder and salt & pepper in a crock post. Replace lid and set on low for 7-8 hours (mine went for 10 hours, so longer if needed is fine) or on high for 2-4 hours.

Once beans are ready, strain, reserving about a cup of the liquid. Smash beans, adding a little of the liquid as necessary. How mashed you want them is up to you-- you can add more liquid to make them into refried bean consistency, or give them a more rustic smash, leaving some beans whole. I went in between and used about half a cup of the liquid.

Heat your pan and brush melted butter to your tortilla; place buttered-side down on your heated pan. Smear beans all over entire tortilla, how thick you want the spread is up to you. Sprinkle a good layer of cheese over your bean spread-- as in, no beans should be showing under your cheese. These are CHEESY double bean quesadillas, remember?

Brush melted butter over the next tortilla and place NON-buttered side down on top of your bean and cheese mixture. Allow to cook for several minutes (sorry I didn't time it) until first side is golden and slightly crispy. Flip and cook the other side.

Once finished cooking, place quesadilla on plate and cut into quarters. I served my quesadillas with avocado ranch (recipe here) and guacamole, can also serve with salsa, sour cream, and/or a good pico de gallo-- super yummy and very easy!

Happy dipping :)

Pretty Perfumes

Like most girly-girls, my beauty obsession extends to fragrances as well. In the past year, I've whittled my two dozen or so bottles down to a select few... but there is definitely a couple that I have on my wishlist!

While some may stick to just one or two scents, I like to change it up day by day depending on my mood and my outfit.  Many of the fragrances I tend to gravitate towards are oriental florals-- feminine, romantic, with a touch of spice.

My Go-To Fragrance: Juicy Couture's Couture Couture

Feeling Sweet Fragrance: Aquolina's Pink Sugar

My Signature Scent: Dior's Miss Dior

Oh So Sophisticated: mark.'s Sophistique

Flower Power: Viktor & Rolf's Flowerbomb

What are some of your must-wear fragrances?

Four Favorites: Gold

Ugh-- I came down with a sore throat this past weekend, which in turn, became a nasty sinus cold. I'm finally feeling more like myself, able to stay at work the entire day (yesterday I came in, then left early) but am still feeling rather... mucus-y. Gross, I know. I am proud of myself for finally getting another post up, I plan on being more consistent in my posting (at least I'm sticking with the four favorites... points?) and continuing to grow my blog. Now if being sick would stop getting in the way.

This week I'm highlighting my four favorite gold pieces-- when I was younger I actually despised gold jewelry and would much rather have worn silver. How times have changed-- these days I am loving gold-- rose gold, antiqued gold, real gold, whatever gold! Lately I have been spotting gold-tipped flats popping up, I think they are so cute and a great way to class up skinny jeans + a blazer, or a cute little dress. While technically the bronzer is well, bronze, I have been dying to try out this new bronzer from Too Faced-- I especially love the packaging, and the fact that it smells like milk chocolate. I think I may have mentioned last week that H&M now has a home section--- love! I caught this cute tea light holder... and it's only $3.95... total steal!

Stripes and Chambray

I came across this Madewell outfit a couple months ago and was excited to finally re-create it and put my own stylish spin on it! I did my own look-for-less version with inexpensive pieces from H&M, J. Crew Factory and Kohls.

Speaking of H&M, did you see you can now finally shop online? That's not even the best part... H&M has a home collection-- bedding, towels, decor, pillows, and more! I feel the line is a cross between Ikea and Urban Outfitters, I have already been spying some must-have items.
