New Year's Eve: Night In or Night Out?

Sequin Skater Skirt

Partying like it's 2014? Don the requisite sparkly attire (don't forget the 'Happy New Year' tiara/hat!), grab a great pair of booties along with smashing accessories and you'll be set to go all night. Make sure to have those champagne-filled flutes ready for toasting at the strike of midnight!

Girls Night In

Watching the ball drop from the comfort of your couch? No shame in that! In fact, once year I celebrated NYE East Coast time when the ball dropped at 9pm MY time... then went to bed shortly after. If you're staying in this year, make a night out of it with a fresh mani, cuddle up in your favorite pajamas and cozy blanket, make some delicious hot chocolate, and get in the mood with a movie such as Gatsby (parties, confetti, an insane amount of champagne!) and of course, New Year's Eve to get you in a festive mood before the ball drops.

Sunday Social- New Year 2014

New Year's Resolutions
One of the saddest days every year has to be the day the Christmas tree and decor comes down, which for us, was tonight. All the lights, the bulbs, the stockings... it all gets packed away until next year :tear: The good part is that New Year's Eve/Day is just a couple days away... and that means a day off for me!
PS- How yummy does my above chocolate ginger and Mexican hot chocolate (with homemade marshmallows!) look? Good stuff.
This week, I'm linking up with Sunday Social New Year edition:

1. What is the best New Year's Eve you’ve ever had?
The best New Year's Eve was probably one of the years my friends and I had a huge party... there's been a few and you know it was a good party if you can't remember it all ;)
I'm still waiting on a NYE in NYC... or even to spend NYE up in Big Bear or other snowy mountain resort.

2. Are you doing anything for NYE this year and if so what?
I have no clue what we'll be doing for NYE! Is it crazy that I don't have a set plan, yet? We can either go the party route (meh) or have a low-key NYE. I'm opting for the latter.

3. Name a book we should all read come January?
Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham
Yes, that is the Lauren Graham of The Gilmore Girls fame. I have had this on my to-read list FOREVER-- it sounds like a good, light read that is perfect to start of the new year.

4. What are your New Year's resolutions/goals?
1. Drink more water (I'll go days before realizing I haven't drank any water... bad, right?)
2. Take a Pilates class or at least be more active (way too much couch lazing in 2013!)
3. Read more-- this latter part of 2013 I've gotten back into reading and hope to continue marking off books on my to-read list.
4. Travel- even if it's a quick weekend trip. Get out to do and see!
5. My final goal is one that most of those in my personal life know the struggle I have been having in achieving this one-- I've been looking & applying for a year without any luck, but am hoping that things will change soon. I'm keeping this one vague because you never know whose eyes are seeing this :P

What are your New Year's resolutions for 2014?

June Jacobs Spa Collection Review

Holiday scented beauty

I had hoped to get this review up before the holidays, but the last week has been pretty hectic. In the industry I work in, beauty products and items find their way across my desk and these are some of the products. While I did not purchase these items, the views and opinion in this review are solely my own.

While I had heard of June Jacobs Spa Collection previously, I had never tried any of the products. The items in the kit I received included the Peppermint Hand and Foot Therapy, Cranberry Body Balm, and the Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Masque. I hope you've noticed an ongoing theme-- all three are holiday scented! These products have a high-end spa quality and are all paraben and preservative-free and contain natural oils and extracts.

The Peppermint Hand and Foot Therapy has become a staple on my bathroom counter and for good reason. The lotion has a luxuriously thick consistency, yet blends in easily without leaving a greasy feeling. The mint extract helps to soothe and heal dryness; the scent is soft, not overpowering.

I tend to stick with moisturizers and lotions that I don't feel that I have to reapply constantly throughout the day (hand lotion excepted) and that leave my skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Made with shea butter, the Cranberry Body Balm does just that. Similar to the hand and foot therapy, the body balm has a thicker consistency then most lotions, leaving my skin silky smooth... and delicious smelling!

About once a week, I use the Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Masque-- typically while in the shower  for 5-10 minutes after I cleanse and dry my face. I expected the masque to have a strong, imitation pumpkin-spice scent yet the product's pumpkin scent is very light and authentic smelling. Once on, I do feel a tingling sensation (not burning) After washing off, the masque leaves my skin feeling smooth and is said to leave pores smaller (my pores are fairly small already so I don't notice much difference there). It is slightly drying (I have combination skin) so those with dry skin may find it too drying.

If you are looking to try new spa-quality skin care products, I do recommend these three above. I am definitely interested in trying a few more items from the June Jacobs Spa Collection, including the Cooling Cucumber Cleanser, Cranberry Pomegranate Moisture Masque, and eye care (I am all about anti-aging and/or brightening eye creams!)

Have you tried any products from this collection? Share!

Christmas Eve & Christmas Day Outfits

skater skirt, cream sweater

Had a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas with Steve, my family and his. Christmas Eve we went out to dinner at a local steakhouse with my family... 2 hours wait! It was well worth it though. For dinner I wanted to wear my new H&M skirt, and even though it was pretty warm, my legs weren't exactly 'skirt-ready' so tights were a must!

On Christmas day, we had four Christmases to attend-- busy day! Getting up this morning for work wasn't easy, I could use a day off from Christmas.  All in all, it was a great day filled with giving, receiving, and eating... a lot of eating!

Some gift highlights: Tripod for my new camera, Fossil wallet (love!), cooking knives, silicon baking mats and a dutch oven, gift cards, Stila makeup brushes, and more. Very grateful for all of my gifts!

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas and holiday season. Next up... New Year's Eve!

Christmas Day Favorites

Merry Christmas!

One of the most wonderful days of the year is finally here-- although it sure doesn't feel much like a wintery Christmas here in LA-- it's about 80 º out! I'm grateful to be able to spend the day with my family and loved ones. We have a busy day ahead with several Christmases to attend, but here are some of my favorites for Christmas day:

Christmas Morning Cinnamon Rolls & Coffee: Christmas morning is not complete without a fresh cup of coffee, the yule log and holiday tunes playing on the TV (my parents don't have a fireplace so we watch a yule log, hehe-- does anyone else do this??) and the smell of cinnamon rolls baking. Yum!

Family Gift Opening: Even though I no longer live with my parents, we still head over there Christmas Eve and stay the night so we can open gifts first thing in the morning. While I love receiving gifts (who doesn't?!?), I also love giving them and surprising my family with things they don't really expect. It really does feel good to give.

Christmas Dinner: Potatoes, beef, rolls... no Christmas is complete without a traditional family dinner.

Feelings of Joy: My favorite thing about Christmas is the overall feelings of joy and cheer you get (minus the shopping stress!) from the holiday season. Spending it with loved ones, hearing Christmas music softly playing in the background, and the wonderful smells of Christmas all make for a special day.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful, joy-filled holiday :)

Four Favorites: My Christmas Wishlist

1. Inslee Haynes 2014 Little Calendar: Inslee's illustrations are beyond gorgeous-- I love how fun and cute they are, so fitting for any girly girl. This calendar would look on my work desk.

2. Stila Tools of the Trade Brush Kit: Stila makes some of my favorite brushes and my brush kit could use a little updating!

3. Stella & Dot Renegade Cluster Bracelet: Ever since spotting this bracelet on a few of my favorite bloggers (include #FourFavorites host Let It Be Beautiful!) I have had it on my wish list. If I don't receive it as a gift, I'm treating myself.

4. Fossil Sydney Zip Clutch: My current wallet is way past due, it won't even zip anymore! I already know I'm getting this from the bf since I picked it out with him, but I can't wait to start using it! PS- I have to give a shoutout to the Fossil team at Victoria Gardens; they were so nice & helpful, especially since it was the end of a busy day. They also threw in a festive box and bow that made wrapping super easy for Steve. Kuddos!

What's on your wish list this year?

My Week on Instagram: Beauty Boxes & Holiday Parties

I am about 95% done with Christmas shopping and wrapping... how did that happen?!? Usually I'm still shopping the weekend just before Christmas... or even just a day or two before. Speaking of which, Christmas is in just 9 days... and then New Years... WOW!

This past weekend was one filled with the aforementioned shopping and wrapping. I had a moment of weakness and actually told Steve that I was "sick of shopping." Luckily we had a little break by attending Two Point Oh! LA's Snowball 2013. Poor Steve was forced to take off the t-shirt and hat, but I think he cleans up real well. More pics below.

Before Snowball, we had a sushi dinner date at RA Sushi. The "RA"ckin' Shrimp is a MUST! I had my favorite the Gojira Roll, another must, and Steve had the Viva Vegas Roll-- all super yummy!

I received my Allure Winter Beauty Box, which was filled with tons of goodies, all full-sized, of makeup, skincare, and hair care. I love all the nail polish shades (including top coat and drying drops that I can't wait to try!), and I think I have enough Cetaphil Moisturizer now to last me about 2 years.

More pics from Snowball:

Kelsi of The Style Smith organized a prom theme-- it was definitely a throwback with Elvis singing!

There was dancing, snacks, piñatas, and my favorite-- the candy bar. You can bet my candy bag was filled with sour belts!

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

Pumpkin Pie (Made From a Real Pumpkin!) with Vanilla Whipped Cream

Pumpkin Pie with Vanilla Whipped Cream | A Good Hue

So this would have been a totally "from scratch" pumpkin pie but I got lazy about the crust and went with an easy refrigerated crust instead. Don't judge me. I did however, cut up and scrape out the  pumpkin I bought at Oak Glen back in October... remember that lil guy? After roasting it, I pureed it and made it into a pie with a little (okay, who are we kidding here??) vanilla whipped cream for Thanksgiving-- delish!

Pumpkin Pie with Vanilla Whipped Cream | A Good Hue
Fresh out of the oven!

This is a yummy recipe and perfect for this time of year and a great way to use up smaller pumpkins saved from Halloween carving. See recipe below:

Pumpkin Pie (adapted from Farmhouse Rules' recipe)
1 Sugar Pumpkin
1 Refrigerated Pie Crust
One 14-ounce can Sweetened Condensed Milk
1/2 cup Whipping Cream
2 tbs. Cornstarch
2 tbs. Molasses
2 tbs. Canola Oil (plus more for the pumpkin)
1 tbs. Cinnamon
1 tsp. Ground Ginger
1/4 tsp. Salt
3 Eggs

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Remove stem from pumpkin and cut in half; scrape insides and remove seeds (I saved mine for toasting!). Lay halves of pumpkin face down on foil-lined baking sheet and rub skin with canola oil. Bake for about 1 hour, until fork tender; take of oven and let cool. Once cooled, scrape out pulp from the roasted pumpkin (makes roughly 4 cups) and puree in blender or food processor until smooth.

For the filling, mix together the pureed pumpkin, sweetened condensed milk, cream, cornstarch, molasses, canola oil, cinnamon, ginger, salt and eggs until well combined. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F.

Press refrigerated pie crust into pie dish or pan, remove excess from edges around the top of the dish. Pour filling into pie crust and bake for about 1 hour or until filling is set. Remove from oven and cool for at least 30 minutes, or chill, before serving.

Vanilla Whipped Cream
2 1/4 cups Chilled Whipping Cream
5 tbs. Powdered Sugar
1 1/4 tsp. Pure Vanilla Extract

Using your mixer, beat cream, vanilla, and powdered sugar in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Store in air-tight container in refrigerator.

P.S.- Don't leave your bag of powdered sugar on the stove near where the oven vents. Yeah, that happened.

Holiday Gift Guide: Gifts For Him

I don't know about you, but I have a hard time picking out gifts for guys. I find that they can be pickier than most girls I know! If they have hobbies they enjoy-- IE playing guitar and fishing-- there's something to work with, but then they'll only use a specific brand of guitar strings or want specific types of lures for fishing (associates at Bass Pro Shops can be your best friend!). I literally had to drag the boyfriend to the store this weekend to point out some things he might be interested in.

The Xbox One is probably the most sought after game system this year but if that's out of your budget there are tablets under $200, cool iPhone cases to fit any guys' style, and home brewing kits to give him yet another hobby. If you're racking your brain on what to get the men in your life, here's a few ideas:

Mr. Beer Home Brewing Kits, $40-$80 | Jack Black First Class Five Skincare Gift Set, $49 | Samsung - Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 - 8GB, $160 | Minnetonka ‘Casey’ Moccasin Slippers, $40 | Plaid Flannel Lounge Pants, $10 | Fossil Grant Chronograph Stainless Steel Watch, $145 | John Varvatos Cologne Gift Set, $66 | Fishing Pole | Society6 iPhone Cases, $35 | Xbox One, $500

Have you found any gifts that your guy absolutely loved? Share!
