Denim Vest for Fall: 3 Ways

I picked up this denim vest in the late spring but was struggling with how it could work as a transition piece into fall and winter. Pulling different pieces from my closet,  I was able to come up with three different looks to wear my denim vest for fall:

Mudd Denim Vest, Kohls (unavailable, try this similar option) | Sweater (similar) | Gap 1969 Always Skinny Black Jeans  | Steve Madden Booties | House of Harlow 1960 Bracelet | Prima Donna Necklace

Adding a denim vest to a simple sweater and black denim combo instantly adds interest and jazzes the plain outfit up. Bold accessories, such as a statement necklace, and my favorite pair of booties brings this outfit from 'blah' to 'BLAM!'

Mudd Denim Vest, Kohls (unavailable, try this similar option) | Merona Plaid Shirt, Target | Full Tilt Skater Skirt, Tilly’s | Kelly & Katie Booties, DSW (similar) | mark. Watch (unavailable, try this similar option)

You might remember this outfit from my Bloggers Who Budget post a couple weeks ago-- it has since become a favorite look of mine! Plaid is perfect for fall and I love the feminine fit of skater skirts-- the vest tops it all off making this such a fun layered look. Too cool out for bare legs? Add a pair of tights!

Mudd Denim Vest, Kohls (unavailable, try this similar option) | Black Dress (similar) | Pointelle Tights | Jessica Simpson Boots (similar)

Speaking of tights, for the last outfit I paired the denim vest with a LBD, pointelle tights to keep warm and knee high boots that I had in the back of my closet. Understatedly simple, yet totally pulled together.

What's your favorite denim vest look?

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS Brow Powder Duo, $23: You cannot forget about the brows and using a quality brow product is a must. I prefer brow powders and this one is a must, you get two shades in one so you can easily create a natural, and smudgeproof, brow.

BAREMINERALS Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in Take Charge, $18: For me, a pretty nude pout completes a smoky eye look and this lip color is absolutely perfect. I love the gold limited edition component! Can’t find this limited edition lipstick? Try the regular Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in the shade Be Free.

Thanksgiving Recipe Roundup

Not sure what to bring to Thursday’s Thanksgiving potluck? Making the entire meal yourself and haven’t finalized your menu yet? Here’s a few recipe ideas to get you going:

I don’t eat much turkey at Thanksgiving… I’m all about the sides and desserts… but when I do, I go for the white meat. If your crowd is all about the white meat and you don’t want to deal with cooking an entire turkey, I recommend this herb roasted turkey breast recipe from Ina Garten—it’s so good!

Whether you like your dressing served on the side or stuffed in the turkey, this is a Thanksgiving must-have classic. I recently created a pumpkin cornbread dressing using Trader Joe’s pumpkin croutons and I gotta say, I love it! A mix of sweet and savory, this one is sure to mix things up at your Thanksgiving table.

I don’t see rice casseroles on the table for Thanksgiving much around here, I think it might be more of a Southern thing? In any case, I definitely would not mind a few bites of this Broccoli Wild Rice Casserole from Pioneer Woman with my turkey. I made it last week for dinner (using a boxed wild rice mix- super easy!) and it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

If a good homemade sweet potato casserole isn't on the table, then it just doesn't feel like Thanksgiving to me. Creamy and sweet, with a crunchy topping, this is definitely my all-time favorite recipe!

Don’t forget the cranberries! Most Thanksgiving meals I have had featured a canned or chutney variety but one year I was served a cranberry orange relish that I still cannot get off my mind. I think this one will hold up well for day-after-Thanksgiving turkey leftover sandwiches.

Last year I made this from scratch pumpkin pie and it turned out absolutely delicious. There’s just something about using fresh roasted pumpkin in lieu of the canned stuff. This year, I’m going to make the crust from scratch as well—my fingers are crossed for another amazing pie!

Drinks are also important for Thanksgiving! I typically drink wine (I go for reds but white works as well!) with the dinner so my Fall Sangria would be perfect. For cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before the big meal, I highly recommend my Rum Cider Punch, which is basically a fall party in your mouth.

What are your favorite Thanksgiving dishes?

Thanksgiving Recipe: Sweet Potato Casserole

Thanksgiving recipes

My all-time favorite Thanksgiving side dish, hands down, is sweet potato casserole. Seriously, I would happily forgo any of the other traditional dishes and eat an entire plateful of this sinfully yummy goodness. I came across this recipe a couple of years ago and with a few tweaks and secret ingredients it has since become my go-to for sweet potatoes— it’s a sure-fire crowd pleaser! With a half-and-half topper of toasted marshmallow gooey-ness and a crunchy, sweet nut streusel, this casserole is a must for your Thanksgiving gathering next week. But, I have to warn you, there probably won’t be any leftovers. I usually end up with a scraped down dish and maybe one measly spoonful left after I serve this. It’s that good.

Sweet Potato Casserole
Adapted from My Recipes
4 ½  pounds sweet potatoes or yams
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup butter, softened
¼  cup milk
¼ cup orange juice
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼  teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

1 ¼  cups cornflakes cereal, crushed
¼  cup chopped pecans
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 ½  cups miniature marshmallows

Preheat your oven to 400° and bake sweet potatoes for about 45 minutes to 1 hour or until tender. Once finished, let sweet potatoes cool for about 20 minutes. Once cooled, peel and mash sweet potatoes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°.

Using a mixer, beat the mashed sweet potatoes with the sugar, butter, milk, orange juice (my secret ingredient!), eggs, vanilla, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg at medium speed until smooth. Spoon the potato mixture into a greased casserole dish.

For the topping, melt 1 tbsp. butter. In a small bowl, combine the crushed cornflakes cereal (I put the cereal into a baggie and use a rolling pin to crush), chopped pecans, melted butter and brown sugar.  Sprinkle over the potato mixture in diagonal rows approximately 2 inches apart. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle the mini marshmallows in the alternate rows between cornflake mixture and bake for another 10 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool, and serve. Bon appetite!

Spill, what is your favorite Thanksgiving side dish?

I’m keeping today’s post short and sweet with a recap of some of my favorite outfits this fall featuring my faux leather jacket. I’m having icky allergies this week with a stuffed up drippy nose, scratchy dry throat, red watery eyes, the works. Tonight’s plans are to go home, throw on a pair of yoga pants, drown my face in peppermint oil (okay, not really) and park myself on the couch to catch up on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Vampire Diaries. I hope I don’t need to remind you that this is a judgment free zone.

While you’re here, be sure to check out my Essie Nail Polish giveaway that ends Monday 11/24 and get a head start on prepping for happy hour tomorrow with this yummy and unabashedly boozy fall cocktail.

As someone who is always on the hunt for budget friendly looks, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to join the #BloggersWhoBudget monthly linkup featuring my must-wear fall pattern—plaid! Sticking to a $75 budget, I was able to create a super cute outfit without breaking the bank. This is a great transitional fall outfit, especially for out here in warmer areas, and for chillier days you can throw on a pair of tights and accessorize with a beanie or cute hat.

Being stylish doesn’t have to mean spending a ton—I was able to get this vest for under $20 by combining a great sale with coupons. If you have a Kohl’s charge card, you can score MAD deals.
