How to: Beachy Waves

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter

A couple weeks ago I posted  about how excited I was to try the new John Frieda Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ In-Shower Treatment, which instantly lightens up to one shade for sun-kissed brunettes, along with the Visibly Brighter™ Subtle Lightening Shampoo,  Visibly Brighter™ Subtle Lightening Conditioner that I picked up at Walmart (FYI- if you can't find the products at your local Walmart, they are also available at Not only was I super impressed with how the products have visibly boosted the brightness of my hair, I was able to brighten and lighten my hair color without the pricey salon visit. You can learn more about the line and each product in my last post here.

Below is a before/after showing how dull and blah my hair looked before using these products. After using the Visibly Brighter™ Treatment just once, my hair instantly looked lighter, brighter, shinier and all-around healthier. I followed the treatment with the Visibly Brighter™ Shampoo and Conditioner and have been using these two or three times a week when I wash my hair.
Before and After with John Frieda Visibly Brigher

To show off my gorgeous, brighter hair, I like to create soft, beachy waves which not only looks super pretty with sun-kissed hair, but the waves really help to show off the multi-dimensional color. This has become my go-to style, which is so fun for spring and summer- it's so easy, taking less than 15 minutes and it's all done with a flat iron. Really! Here's how to get these soft, beachy waves:

Step 1: After using the Visibly Brighter™ Treatment, followed then by the Visibly Brighter™ Shampoo and Visibly Brighter™ Conditioner, let hair air-dry. My hair is more on the straight side and I find that it holds the curl better when air-dried as opposed to blow drying. Prior to styling, spritz with a heat protector spray to prevent damage.

Step 2: Clip or pin half hair up (or 1/3 if your hair is on the thicker side) to start on the bottom layer closest to the nape of your neck.

Step 3: Using a heated flat iron (I use a 1.25") clamp about 1" of hair in the iron and in a single motion twist away from your face and pull down through hair. It's important to do this in a single movement so you don't create funky dents in your hair. For a modern look, leave about 1" of the ends straight. Do the same with the next sections of hair, alternating between twisting away from face with twisting towards face.

Step 4: Let hair down from clip and continue curling, being sure to start the curl from the hairline and working down.

Step 5: Finish by running your hands through your hair to break up the strands and create loose waves. Add a spritz of hairspray, or my pick, sea salt spray, to ensure the style holds and you are good to go!
