DIY Honey Oatmeal Acne Mask

Anti-Acne Face Mask
I love taking some me time with an at-home spa day—a nice shower or bath, applying a face mask, painting my nails, and just taking some time to relax. For face masks, such as the below DIY Oatmeal Anti-Acne Mask, I typically like to make my own using natural ingredients—they’re quick to mix up and I usually already have the ingredients on hand.

In the past few months, I have discovered the wonders tea tree oil has been working on my chin acne—better than any spot treatment or anti-acne product I have ever used. I have learned about other natural ingredients that contain anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help with acne and breakouts as well, including oatmeal and honey. Who knew?

This honey oatmeal mask is gentle enough to use a couple times a week and is good for all skin types, including sensitive skin, leaving skin soft and helping to clear acne. I do recommend trying a patch test first to see how your skin reacts.

DIY Oatmeal Anti-Acne Mask
Ingredients:
2 tbsp. Ground Oats
2 tbsp. Honey (raw)
½ tbsp.. Lemon Juice (fresh)
3-5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

To grind oats, put in a blender or food processor and pulse. In a bowl, mix together the ground oats, honey, lemon juice and tea tree oil. Now, dig in- yum, yum. Kidding!!

Start by cleansing your face and gently patting it dry. Standing over the sink (this could get messy!), apply the mask to your entire clean face and around your eye area. If you have any extra, you can store in the refrigerator. Leave the mask on for about 10-15 minutes and relax—do your nails, catch up on emails, or like me, edit the photos for this post.

To remove, wash off the mask using cold water and a washcloth. I recommend doing this over a trash can or sink with garbage disposal as the thick mask could clog sinks.

Good HUES-Day: Good To Glow

I rarely pay more than $30 for a single beauty item... paying $50 or $60 is pretty much unfathomable to my bank account. If and when I finally do, I think it will be towards a bronzer or highlighter-- something to get my glow on. You only live once, right?

Saturday Style: Shopping Day

Today I'm heading out to Santa Monica for some shopping! I'm keeping my outfit simple-- it's hot out so shorts are a must-- with a basic black tee, my favorite Dolce Vita sandals (similar style shown above) and a fedora.

How are you spending your Saturday?

Summer Floral Lovin'

You know what is one of the best feelings in the world? When you're in the store, you have a set goal of what you're shopping for, but out of the blue on the wrong rack is the perfect item... in your size... for a good price. In my case it was at H&M, I was shopping for office appropriate clothes and I stumbled upon the cutest floral cardigan. It was on the wrong rack and I didn't find it anywhere else in the store and best yet? It was in my size. SCORE!

BeautyCon Los Angeles 2014

BeautyCon Recap

Where can you go to find hundreds of screeching, celeb-crazed tweens as if The Biebs himself just made an appearance? BeautyCon!

Joking aside, I was offered 2 VIP tickets to attend BeautyCon, a beauty and fashion conference in Downtown Los Angeles this past weekend and took my sister Melissa along. The conference features panelists from some of the biggest Internet influentials in beauty and fashion, mainly YouTube stars/gurus. Aside from the screaming girls, we actually had a good time and were able to check out many of the booths. Panelists included Kandee Johnson, Aimee Song, Elle & Blair Fowler, Shay Mitchell, Bethany Mota, Kelly Osbourne and more. We forwent the speakers and sessions— the lines for these were long and tween-filled, not our scene. I'm not even 30 and I felt like an oldie :P

BeautyCon LA

One of my favorite booths included Mr. Kate’s booth, which had such a cute set up and was filled with her gorgeous jewelry designs —I even got to meet her which was so awesome! I’m loving her hand-painted BeautyMarks, stylish girly yet sophisticated faux tattoos—I picked out a DIY gold arrow for my arm and it still has not washed off! Um, can real gold tattoos be a thing, please? She also just launched her watercolor BeautyMarks, they’re so pretty, check them out!

We also headed over to ELLE Magazine’s booth (gorgeous!), where we had Charmsies, cute iron in hair charms, applied to our hair. These are super easy to apply and look so cute—you simply attach the charms to your hair using a straightening iron. Charmsies offers several different styles and even offers a collaboration with Free People.

Another brand I discovered at BeautyCon was Scratch, who offers a Monthly Mani Box filled with limited edition nail wraps (similar to foil but look more realistic, like nail polish), tools, how-tos and nail accents and more. Each month the box is curated by a special guest—past curators include I Spy DIY, Joy the Baker, and Get Nailed.

Scratch offered accent nail wraps made just for BeautyCon—I got the adorable Lipstick (of course!) and Palm Tree designs. Watching the manicurist apply them, I know I can easily do it myself—it was even so easy for her to trim them. Add a top coat and done! If you’re into nail art and love monthly boxes, this one is definitely worth looking into.

* We forgot to snap a pic while there of the cute BeautyCon edition nail wraps. By now they're not so perfect... I am the worst with manis and chipped nails!

Covergirl offered quick makeovers and manis while a DJ spinned some beats, there was a lash bar, a selfie studio, NYX had a booth that featured a beauty vending machine, there was even a puppy “kissing booth” sponsored by a pet rescue (I did feel bad for the puppies though, it probably wasn’t the best environment for them L ), a VIP/Pro lounge and more. Overall we had a good time and it was actually pretty fun hanging out with my lil sis. Here are a few more snaps from the day:

I understand a little waterproof mascara, maybe some bronzer, but full on makeup to the beach or the pool? Not a fan.

What do you say, DO or DON'T?

DIY Sea Salt Spray + Beachy Waves

Beachy waves

My summer hair routine is very low maintenance—I’ll wash it, let it air dry then maybe run my straightener through... or just leave it. Aside from a dab of leave-in conditioner, I rarely use product, but when I do, it’s always a sea salt spray. My hair is mostly straight so getting any kind of wave or curl can be a challenge; sea salt spray is the only thing I have found that works to give my hair those beachy waves—and not all stiff and gunked up with product. Yeah, I totally said gunk.

I decided to make my own DIY Sea Salt Spray, which I think gave better results than my store-bought spray. Beachy waves are a simple style that looks harder to achieve than it really is. Think this sea salt spray is hard to make? No way! Read on for details:

DIY Sea Salt Spray
Ingredients:
1 cup Warm Water
1-2 tbsp Sea Salt
2 tsps Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Squirt of leave-in conditioner
Dab of hair gel
Optional: Essential oils such as lavender, citrus, etc.
Spray bottle

Add the warm water to your spray bottle and simply mix in all the other ingredients; shake well. You can add in 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil, however I left mine as is to have that tropical coconut scent. To make it totally natural, leave out the leave-in conditioner and use fresh aloe vera gel instead of hair gel.

Spray on slightly damp towel-dried/air-dried hair and scrunch up the ends. If your hair is pretty straight, you can put into a braid while it dries to help give it waves. Once almost dry, scrunch up some more and twirl strands around your finger to mix up the pieces. Super easy and super cute for summer!

Beach Day with Sand Cloud

I usually find myself gravitating towards multitask items that help make my life easier. When one of the founders of Sand Cloud reached out to me with the ultimate beach multi-tasker I thought, 'This is pure genius.'

How many times have you been to the beach and tried to prop your head up, either on your bag or another towel, and it just wasn't that comfortable? Enter Sand Cloud, a handwoven Turkish towel which features a non-bulky pillow that can be removed and then worn as a sarong. Cool, right?!

Unlike a standard beach towel, the sand slides right off of the material, which is awesome because you can go from laying on it in the sand to wrapping it around your waist without it having huge clumps of sand stuck to it. The eco-friendly material is also thin enough that it dries quickly when wet but thick enough to act as a barrier between body and sand. Packing it up was super easy, just rolled it and stuck it in my beach bag and it was much lighter than carrying a beach towel.

Learn more about this new Southern California brand (including how they donate 10% of net profits to marine preservation!) by checking out their Kickstarter campaign. The goal is to raise $15,000 and they're almost there-- just 6 days left! If you donate $30+, you'll receive your very own Sand Cloud in your color choice!
